Celebrating the European Day of Independent Living
Everything we do here at Áiseanna Tacaíochta (ÁT) is underpinned by the values and philosophy of Independent Living, and that’s why we’re proud to support the second European Day of Independent Living today.
The day marks an opportunity to celebrate and promote those values – freedom, choice, dignity, equality – and to stand determined to achieve our rights, as people with disabilities, to them.
Independent Living means that you, as a person with a disability, enjoy the same freedom, dignity and choice as everyone else, and that you are empowered to take charge of your own life, making the decisions which affect you for yourself. This extends to every aspect of your life, be that at home, at work, or in the community.
Independent Living also means that you are entitled to and can access the practical support and assistance which enables you to contribute and participate fully in society, equally to other citizens. It gives you more freedom and independence, reflecting your own needs, ambitions and preferences.
These are the things that make an enriching, fulfilling life, and it’s crucial that we, as people with disabilities, are empowered to embrace them and to live our lives as we choose to.
