Philosophy of Independent Living
Everything we do at ÁT is underpinned by the philosophy of Independent Living. Independent Living means that you, as a person with a disability, enjoy the same freedom, dignity and choice as everyone else, and that you are empowered to take charge of your own life, making the decisions which affect you for yourself. This extends to all aspects of your life: at home, at work, and in the community.
We have created a range of documents exploring Independent Living, covering the following topics:
- A Brief History of its Emergence in 1960’s America.
- Individuals with Disabilities Taking Control as Consumers.
- Harnessing the Power of the Collective.
- Disability as a Human Rights Issue.
- Promoting a Social Model of Disability.

We also highly recommend that you watch or listen to the experiences and insights of two of the most influential figures of the Independent Living movement, Ed Roberts and Judy Heumann. This seminal interview, given during a three-day conference on Independent Living in Sweden in 1984, remains eloquent, powerful and absolutely relevant today: just click here to watch the video.
